When I was in the Iraq War, I once turned to a chaplain for guidance. What I hoped would be a private moment of support quickly became a source of trauma when word spread about my attempt to seek help. That breach of trust left a lasting impact. During the pandemic, the demand for mental health care surged, and with it, suicide rates climbed—leading to the creation of the national crisis line, 988. This piece reflects on that broader mental health crisis while revisiting my own experience of seeking support from military chaplains. Though presented as safe and confidential spaces, these encounters often carried hidden risks, especially in the high-pressure environment of war.
