Postwar Sandbox PTSD Therapy

Acrylic on sand, foam, hardware, and foam board. 48” x 65” x 65” in.

During my deployment to the Middle East, I learned that the U.S. military often refers to Iraq as the “Sandbox.” Postwar Sandbox PTSD Therapy draws from a nickname of Iraq, reimagining it as a space for healing rather than conflict. The work centers on the importance of mutual support and the slow, necessary process of recovery—letting time unfold naturally. A metal folding chair, commonly found in group therapy settings, serves as a key symbol. It invites stillness, presence, and shared experience, encouraging participants to focus on the now rather than remain trapped in the past.
